In addition to raising a family and running two businesses, Christy Hogan – president of Podz Eyewear and Dr.SunRx – somehow finds time to support local charity events. For starters, she created two styles of breast cancer awareness sunglasses, which she is donating to survivors at the Race Against Breast Cancer. The glasses are also available for interested distributors to carry.

The Race Against Breast Cancer’s 20th anniversary 5k run/walk is scheduled for Oct. 1, 2011, at Washburn University in Topeka, Kan. This event helps to provide mammography services at no charge to women in the Shawnee County and immediate surrounding areas. Race day activities include a recognition ceremony, dove releases, fitness warm-up and balloon launch, plenty of food, drawings and an award ceremony.

This year, Hogan has also fundraised $4,600 for the American Cancer Society (ACS). She personally lent her support to the 7th annual ACS Couture for Cancer event at the Topeka Performing Arts Center on April 16, 2011. This women’s fashion event included a live and silent auction, yielding nearly $80,000 for the charity. The ACS uses donations to fund research, as well as offering patient programs, education and  various services to assist patients during cancer treatments.

Besides her own contributions, Hogan takes it upon herself to find additional businesses in the area to participate in donating to the cause. “It amazes me the amount of strength I see in so many breast cancer survivors; their spirit and courage inspire me to believe that in my lifetime, there will be a cure,” Hogan shares.
