News out of Providence, R.I., confirms the state is among those attempting to enact anti-tanning legislation. Thursday, the Senate passed a bill focused on banning UV tanning for customers under the age of 18. Sen. Rhoda Perry sponsored the measure in the hopes of discouraging indoor tanning among “children … who are also not legally old enough to make decisions about their health.” She also states, “Cancer is a public health crisis … it also costs our health care system billions of dollars every year.”
Current Rhode Island state regulations call for parental accompaniment for minor-aged tanners. The new law, if passed, would only allow those under 18 to tan if they have a doctor’s prescription. It’s now up to the House to review and vote upon the measure.
