Australia Narrowly Avoids Under-30 Tan Ban

Containing one-third of Australia's population, as well as its largest city in the form of its capital, Sydney, a massive anti-tanning effort has been halted in New South Wales (NSW). The NSW Labor government had been supporting efforts toward an indoor tanning ban for anyone under the age of 30; however, with an election anticipated to shake up government lines, the endeavor was abandoned.

The news broke late last week with the Environment Department’s announcement that ''after careful consideration,” the government had shared its intention not to pursue the ban. There is speculation that pro-tanning lobbyists may have influenced the decision.

Campaigners who were supporting the ban are optimistic that the new health minister will resurrect the anti-tanning measures. No comment is expected until the new representatives take office.
