An official from the Canadian Cancer Society appeared before the St. Thomas council earlier this month in a plea to increase the limitations placed on local tanning salons. Among her requests, Angie Woodcock pushed for a ban on tanning for those under the age of 18, as well as the implementation of new constraints and informational materials related to what she perceives to be the potential pitfalls of indoor tanning.
Woodcock mentioned reports that she maintains tie health concerns with the use of tanning equipment. She then asserted that “all levels of government” need to be involved in what for her has been an outright show of hostility against indoor tanning. She even boldly declared, "We've moved from what we think causes cancer to what we know is causing cancer."
During her presentation, Woodcock also commended municipalities for passing prior bylaws she considered to be in the same arena, such as banning smoking near playgrounds and cosmetic pesticide bans.
Despite her impassioned plea, the council did not initiate any new actions or questioning.
