Should You Rehire Employees You Laid Off?

As things begin to turnaround for many businesses, some salon owners are starting to consider taking on more staff to fill the holes caused by necessary layoffs. And what safer bet is there than rehiring a former employee who was reliable and a good worker?

In fact, a recent Career Builder survey found that 26 percent of the more than 26,000 hiring managers surveyed planned to hire back top performers. But it might not be as simple as extending an invite and having the former employee gratefully accept. Here are the pros and cons of a rehire, from Inc.com.

Pros

•Less expensive. From training to spending valuable time recruiting and interviewing, salon owners can save time and money by offering the position to someone who has held it before.

•Retention rate is higher. Because the former employee knows what is expected of them – and what to expect of the job – they are more likely to stay once they come back.

•They become more productive in a shorter amount of time.

Cons

•To be considered, the former employee should have left the company under good terms. If the employee was terminated for recurring issues, do not consider them a rehire possibility, no matter how desperately you need the help.

•Bad feelings about the layoff. Odds are, that even under the most seemingly positive layoff scenario, the former employee will have some bad feelings about things. He or she may see it as poor treatment by you or the company. The best way to smooth things over is to be honest about why the layoff was necessary; why you are now in a position to hire them back; and why you want this person, specifically, to come back on the team.

•The employee may want incentive to come back. Be prepared to offer more money or other incentives – but only if the employee can provide proof of increased skill set (i.e., he or she spent time with a competitor or received extra outside training).
