Teeth whitening is a popular cosmetic procedure that many tanning salons have incorporated into their ancillary offerings. However, the Board of Dental Examiners in Wyoming has petitioned the state attorney general’s office to file a complaint on their behalf regarding one area salon’s teeth whitening services. The board has requested a court order to make the salon cease from offering the procedure – one the dental community claims qualifies as “dentistry.” It defines this as “the examination, diagnosis, treatment, planning and care of conditions within the human oral cavity and its adjacent tissues and structures.”
The salon’s services are much like those used at professional tanning establishments across the nation – they sell customers a kit, as well as UV lamp light sessions that work in conjunction with the products.
The salon owners maintain that customers are responsible for applying the product and handling the process. However, the formal complaint alleges that staff members assist in the procedure.
A representative from the state’s dental examiners group says that complaints – particularly from dentists – have risen regarding teeth whitening services that are not administered through a dental office. Typically, the board sends a written correspondence insisting the services be halted.
Salon owners offering teeth-whitening services should ensure they are following all state guidelines regarding the cosmetic procedure.
