Dino LaVerghetta, a 28-year-old Republican and New York-based attorney, hopes to displace Rep. Carolyn Maloney from her congressional seat this November. LaVerghetta has been vocal about his support of tanning salon entrepreneurs, who he indicates have been unfairly targeted as small-business owners, especially at the hand of Maloney – who’s pushed for increased regulations during her tenure. He comments that there isn’t currently a “strong lobby” on behalf of the salon owners.
Thus far, LaVerghetta’s campaign has established a site for fundraising and to build awareness regarding his position on the biased tan tax, www.repealthetantax.org. The candidate also held a press conference at Sunpoint Spa last month, where he criticized the new legislation.
He plans to ramp up his campaign efforts during a hiatus from his law firm, and is hopeful to gain support from the non-Democratic parties.
