South Dakota’s tanning salon owners and customers experienced a sound victory this week with the defeat of two anti-tanning bills. The Senate voted down two measures aimed at the under-18 crowd.
The first bill nearly drew a unanimous vote (30 against, 2 in favor). It proposed a ban that would prevent those tanners under the age of 18 from using a salon’s equipment. The second measure was also soundly defeated, but with a less commanding vote. Nine were in favor of requiring parental permission for under-18 tanners; 25 opposed the bill.
One senator who encouraged voting against the measures mentioned they would not impact youngsters’ outdoor tanning habits, yet would infringe on the consumers’ personal freedom.
