Proposed Florida Teen Tan Ban Amended to Under 14

The majority of teen tanners in Florida may be able to continue receiving professional salon services, so long as they have parental permission, thanks to a recent vote by a Florida Senate committee.

The original measure sought to ban teen tanning for those under 16, but the amended version would apply the ban only to those under 14. Just last year, a bill seeking to ban teen tanning was voted down by the Senate Judiciary Committee.

The new legislation requires that parents go in the salon to sign paperwork on behalf of their children ages 14-17. Among the documents are cancer warnings and a consent form.

Although passed by the Senate Judiciary, SB 430 is still routing through committee – and a companion bill must pass the House – before facing a vote to become law.

The Florida Indoor Tanning Salon Organization (FITSO) is seeking local industry support to help prevent restrictive legislation in the state; e-mail kbutler@vpico.com if you’d like more information.
