The FDA: Opening Up to Tanning Industry?

The Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has often been scrutinized for keeping its operations too private. A measure of confidentiality has been necessary due to the organization’s work with privileged scientific information from the businesses it works with. However, the amount of information kept private may change, thanks to ongoing public concerns about the FDA’s lack of communication regarding potential safety concerns.

FDA Basics, the new online program, will involve online interviews each month with senior officials. Webinars are also in the works. The new measures were reportedly designed to provide information about the federal agency and its regulated products. Indoor tanning is slated to be covered in May under the title “The Risks of Ultraviolet Rays.” There is also a session scheduled for March called “The Inspection Process.” Details of the contents were not available at press time. The organization offers this FDA Basics site as a method of tracking the program and its initiatives.

The online program stems from a task force created in June 2009 to review the FDA’s transparency.
