The teen tanning ban that passed in Howard County, Md., earlier this month will not be enforced until 2010. The county’s health officer reports that more time is needed to disseminate necessary documentation to the region’s tanning businesses.
Local salon owners are still reeling from the regulation’s passage; however the stall in enforcement may allow them much-needed time to formulate legal challenges. The ITA is currently exploring its legal options, practically ensuring a suit will be filed soon. One of the main concerns is whether the health department was justified in becoming involved in the matter. Also at question continues to be the issue of parental rights being trumped by local law enforcement.
Beyond these woes, the new regulation calls for an additional yearly inspection fee to be charged to salon owners.
