In an unprecedented legislative move, officials in Howard County, Md., have issued a ban Tuesday on all indoor tanning for children younger than 18.

The ban, the first of its kind in the country, passed by a unanimous vote from the Howard County Board of Health. The new law, effective Thursday, will affect the county’s 17 tanning salons as well as numerous other facilities that offer tanning beds.

Indoor Tanning Association officials told the source that the new law is overkill, as there is already a state law requiring parental consent for minors to tan. Local owners fear that they will go out of business. If the ban stands up and is supported, some tanning representatives fear other counties will make similar bans.

To this point, LOOKING FIT is unaware of any legal challenges to the ban. If any arise, please share with a comment on this article or on the thread discussing the issue on Tan Today.
