College Students Not Deterred by Tanning Paranoia

When the International Agency for Research on Cancer indicated (accurately or not) this summer that tanning was as dangerous as arsenic and mustard gas, many in the industry feared the information would scare away customers. But it appears many young adult tanners, particularly female college students, are undeterred by the new warnings, whether it’s because they don’t believe the hype or they are willing to accept the risks of indoor tanning in order to achieve their coveted bronzed look.

Residents of Vista del Sol Apartments in Tempe, Ariz., which is very near the campus of Arizona State University, continue to tan in their apartment complex. Regardless of industry opinions on private units within homes and residences, the continued use shows a sustained interest in tanning. Similarly, other students interviewed by the campus newspaper expressed an interest in continuing to tan.
