In more economic good news, it appears a slight majority of companies that have implemented hiring and salary freezes are considering lifting them, a move that would no doubt breathe life into an ailing job market.

A survey from Watson Wyatt, a Washington, D.C.-based human resources firm, shows that 54 percent of employers that have frozen salaries plan to unfreeze them within the next six months. This number was at 17 percent in June and 33 percent in August. Forty-nine percent of employers that have ceased hiring plan to hire more within six months.

Now for the bad news: 20 percent of those surveyed anticipate making more layoffs in the end of 2009 or during 2010.

A possible conclusion is that the recovery will be hit or miss through different sectors and industries. Some will return to full strength or grow in 2010, while others will lag behind and struggle to keep up.
