Industry research firm IBISWorld recently released its report on the U.S. indoor tanning industry. Among its findings:
- Economy and skin cancer concerns are hindering the tanning industry, which is expected to decline by 5.1 percent this year.
- UV tanning is currently the No. 1 revenue source for tanning salons at 72 percent, but sunless tanning continues to rise in popularity.
- Sunless currently accounts for 11 percent of total industry revenue, but is expected to grow to 17 percent by the end of 2009.
“Tanning salons are operating in a mature market and, to stay in the game, salons need to adapt to market trends and offer innovative spray-on tanning products and services,” says George Van Horn, senior analyst with IBISWorld. “Because this is a long-term shift, those who diversify their menu, such as by providing health and beauty services, will have a greater chance in generating revenue.”
