Vincent Cogliano, head of the IARC Monographs program at the International Agency for Research on Cancer was recently quoted as saying the results on which many of the conclusions of the IARC report on tanning equipment are based are "limited” in an article for The Whig Standard.
Following the publication of that article, the ITA sent a letter to each news organization that ran a story sensationalizing the IARC report by grossly exaggerating the dangers of tanning bed use. Because the article quoting Cogliano only ran in one small newspaper in Canada, the association wants to make sure each reporter that covered the story is fully aware of the IARC’s opinion of the study.
Finally, the ITA has asked its law firm to explore whether legal action against the IARC or the World Health Organization is realistic.
Click here for a copy of the letter the ITA sent out notifying reporters about Cogliano’s statements—the ITA urges salons owners to send the letter to news outlets in their areas that ran sensationalistic articles about the IARC report.
