The California Indoor Tanning Trade Organization (CITTO) recently sent an e-mail urging California tanning salon owners to contact their state legislators. The following is an excerpt from that e-mail:

New legislation in Texas has raised the minimum age to tan to 16 1/2. We expect similar legislation to be introduced during the California legislative session beginning next January. Additionally, we know Assemblyman Ted Lieu has been requesting information regarding airbrush tanning and minors.

That is why now is the time to develop a relationship with your state assemblyman and state senator. Contact their local offices and request a personal meeting. Give them a tour of your business. Show them your procedures in regard to minors tanning. Focus on your professionalism, customer care, training and efforts to avoid overexposure and to educate clients about ultraviolet light. Having that personal contact prior to any legislation being introduced may help prevent anti-tanning legislation.
