Americans uncertain about the future are cutting their budgets with vigor, including the expenses that come along with new babies. The birth rate declined nationwide by nearly 2 percent according to the National Center for Health Statistics, in 2008—this after reaching a 50-year high in 2007.
Economists blame the recession for the decline, noting that the same trend was seen during the Great Depression.
Birth rates dipped the lowest in Arizona, California and Florida.
