STORES magazine released its annual Top 100 Retailers list, with Wal-Mart at No. 1 and leaps and bounds ahead of the other 99 retailers on the list.

It’s no surprise to find that the nation’s top discount stores (KMart, Costco and SuperValu, to name a few) were at the top spots. Home Depot was ousted from its previous No. 2 spot to No. 4, Lowe’s gained on its competitor by moving up to the No. 8 spot from No. 14, and Best Buy broke the top 10 for the first time.

Costco crept into the No. 3 spot, beating out Target, which ranked at No. 5. Experts are looking at managerial and marketing choices of all companies, but note that consumers are desperate for goods on the cheap in these economic times.
