Scotland pharmacies report that requests for needles to inject Melanotan are on the rise, prompting health experts to express concern regarding needle safety.

According to the BBC, the health board has raised concerns about the possibility of cross-contamination and infection from injections. A spokeswoman is quoted as saying, “Users could become involved in risky behaviour such as reusing or sharing injecting equipment and could potentially contract viruses including Hepatitis C, B and HIV and other associated infections.”

Melanotan is a synthetic hormone that encourages the body to produce melanin. Health experts have warned it could damage the immune and cardiovascular systems and trigger other problems.
