An update to the EPA’s fuel economy ratings leaves some would-be Cash for Clunkers traders ineligible for the deal.
The Car Allowance Rebate System—what has been dubbed Cash for Clunkers—allows citizens to get up to $4,500 in vouchers toward fuel-efficient vehicles if they trade in their gas-guzzlers. Under the bill, car owners receive a voucher they trade in a vehicle getting 18 miles per gallon or less for one getting at least 22 miles per gallon.
With the EPA’s updates, many cars that had been listed as getting 18 mpg have been upgraded to a higher mpg, making them ineligible for the program. An EPA representative says the change has made an equal number of cars eligible that weren’t before, as ineligible that were before the change.
