A new washing machine prototype can launder a load of clothes with one cup of water and leaves them virtually dry when the cycle is over, saving time and water.
Developed at the University of Leeds in the United Kingdom by a company called Xeros, the new machine could cut water use in washing machines by 90 percent and reduce 30 percent of the energy used in the laundry process.
The machine replaces most of the water with thousands of tiny, reusable nylon polymer beads, which attract and absorb dirt under humid conditions. A load will require only the water and detergent necessary to wet the clothes.
The developing company is expected to license the technology to major washing-machine manufacturers within the year.
