If the IRS has its way, all paid tax preparers will need to be licensed in order to prevent fraud and improve compliance.
The government’s revenue department would like to make stricter requirements of tax preparers, as 80 percent of all Americans pay for tax help during the tax season. Currently, the only tax preparers who need licensure are those representing clients in IRS proceedings or audits.
IRS Commissioner David Shulman is expected to pitch this proposal to President Obama by the end of the year.
