A study suggests that many critically ill patients may be vitamin D deficient.

Published as a letter in the April 30 issue of the New England Journal of Medicine, the study looked at individuals in an intensive care unit (ICU) and that 45 percent were vitamin D deficient. In addition, three patients died during the study, and the researchers found that those individuals had the lowest vitamin D levels of anyone in the study group.
