The weekly tally for those filing first-time unemployment claims for the week of April 4 (the most recent data available) was 610,000, a number that decreased by more than 50,000 from the week before.
Overall, those claiming unemployment breaks new record at more than 6 million. Many view the rate of joblessness as a barometer for the economy as a whole, and find the staggering rate of unemployment (now at 8.5 percent) does not bode well for the recession.
