Americans are more troubled by the problem of unemployment than any other, according to a new poll by CNN and Opinion Research Corp. In the survey, 36 percent of people say unemployment is the most important economic issue in the country—that’s almost triple the number who said the same (13 percent) in April 2008. Respondents feel other pressing economic issues are:
- Inflation—20 percent
- The mortgage crisis—16 percent
- Stock market—14 percent
- Taxes—11 percent
Last April, the survey showed that rising prices and the rate of inflation were the most pressing issues for Americans, with 47 percent of respondents citing that as the most important economic issue.
This year, the unemployment rate hit 8.1 percent in February, which is a half percentage point higher than in January and the highest in more than 25 years.
Not surprisingly, the economy is the most important issue overall for Americans, with 63 percent saying it’s their top concern. Other important issues were:
- Health care—9 percent
- Federal budget deficit—8 percent
- Wars in Iraq and Afghanistan—6 percent
- Education and terrorism—5 percent each
- Energy policy—2 percent
