Some small businesses are actually thriving because of the state of the economy. According to BusinessWeek, those businesses include:
Pawn shops and thrift stores. Resale stores are reporting higher business volume and a wider customer base that includes those who have lost jobs or have greatly diminished stock portfolios.
Auto mechanics and other repairmen. As people choose to refurbish an item instead of replacing it, the repair industry is seeing a big boost in business.
Repo businesses. The high number of loan defaults on pricey items such as cars, boats and motorcycles is keeping repo men busy.
Financial planning and consultation businesses. Between foreclosures and escalating consumer debt, businesses that consolidate, restructure, counsel, and settle debt and foreclosures have seen a spike in customers.
