The U.S. government has given consent for human trials for a man-made hormone called afamelanotide. Unlike Melanotan II—which has gotten a lot of international publicity lately—this product is not being promoted as a cosmetic drug. Instead, it will be tested as a treatment for patients who face serious danger from exposure to ultraviolet light, such as people with rare genetic diseases.
