Could women be the answer to turning this economy around? While that would be a bold assertion, many are now working under the understanding that businesses which broaden their outlooks and value varied perspectives fare better in the long run, according to an article for Fast company magazine.

The article points out groups with balanced gender proportions are more innovative. Also, companies where at least a quarter of the executives are women have a 35 percent higher return on equity and 34 percent higher total return to shareholders than same-industry companies that do not.

In a bad economy, companies tend to either focus only on the immediate bottom line or to use the downturn as an opportunity to make changes. The challenge is to get more companies to realize that women are an integral part of the economic solution. And some major organizations are already doing so.
