Same-store sales reports show a steep decline across the board for chain retail stores open at least one year, with the exception of Wal-Mart.
The drop reported was 1.8 percent, with experts noting that consumers are holding on to their dollars in a volatile job environment.
Wal-Mart posted an increase in same-store sales in January of 2.1 percent, while the No. 1 clothing chain, The Gap, reported a staggering 23 percent drop.
