Americans continually receive conflicting media information regarding their health. One day fish is a healthy dietary choice—the next, it’s a mercury-filled hazard. Selenium has been heralded as a brilliant antioxidant, but other studies show it can increase one’s risk of diabetes.

Despite the mixed messages, many experts are standing firm with their recommendations for better health—including the role of fish oil, multivitamins, calcium and antioxidants. The news from doctors and researchers is especially positive regarding vitamin D. Despite its well-known benefits, it’s widely believed that most people don’t get enough vitamin D, and it’s more readily accessible as a byproduct of tanning than from eating unfortified foods.
