According to a forecast released by the U.S. Conference of Mayors, only five metropolitan areas in the U.S. will escape job losses this year. Ithaca, N.Y.; Fairbanks, Alaska; and St. George, Utah, are among the small percentage of the nation's 363 metropolitan areas expecting to see employment rates stay the same or even increase slightly.
Of the metro areas that are negatively affected, New York is expected to take the biggest hit—losing a projected 181,000 jobs in 2009 due to Wall Street fallout.
