The Federal Communications Commission will consider a plan to offer free, pornography-free wireless Internet to all Americans. It’s a plan that outgoing Chairman Kevin Martin is pushing for and that the wireless industry and some consumer groups oppose.
In the FCC’s plan, it would auction off a portion of airwaves of which the winner would be required to set aside a quarter for free Internet. Paid, faster Internet service would still be allowable on the other three-quarters of the purchased airwaves. The free service could be slower, and the owner would be required to filter out sites deemed unsuitable for children, including pornography.
To placate consumer advocates who oppose a pornography filter, the FCC has proposed that adults could opt out of it. The wireless industry objects to any plan for free Internet.
