Rough economies can take a psychological toll on small-business owners and salespeople. Often, it’s not the actual state of the economy but people’s reactions to it that cause stress. Entrepreneur magazine columnist Kristin Wehner offers these tips to stay cool under the pressure of the recession.
1. Maintain your foundation. That means eat, sleep, exercise and spend time with friends and loved ones. Sure, leisure activities may have to be skirted back, but there are plenty of inexpensive ways to perform self-maintenance.
2. Change the situation. You probably don’t need stock-price text message alerts being sent to you every hour, nor do you need CNBC or CNN playing in constant rotation.
3. Get perspective. Call it the it-could-be-worse philosophy if you want, but remember that there’s probably a lot of good in your situation. Make a concerted effort to focus on those factors and not to dwell on gloom-and-doom negatives.
