According to a new study, people with higher blood levels of vitamin D may be less likely to develop gum disease.

Published in the American Journal of Clinical Nutrition, the study used data from a national U.S. health survey. Researchers found that teens and adults with the highest blood levels of vitamin D were 20 percent less likely than those with the lowest levels to show signs of gingivitis.

Gingivitis arises when bacteria build up between the teeth and gums, leading to inflammation and bleeding. Other recent research has suggested that vitamin D may fight inflammation, and the study authors speculate that such an anti-inflammatory benefit may explain the vitamin’s link to healthier gums.
