Southfield, Mich.-based Total Eclipse Tanning and Oldsmar, Fla.-based Devoted Creations have teamed up to raise awareness for breast cancer by supporting the annual Breast Cancer 3-Day Walk in Detroit this September. Participants must raise a minimum of $2,200 to walk, and all money benefits the Susan G. Komen for the Cure foundation.
Pat Cushen, owner of Total Eclipse Tanning, decided the best way to get her predominantly female clients involved with her efforts to give back to the community was to raise money for the foundation and the walk.
“Breast cancer affects one in eight women,” she says. “Breast cancer kills more women in the United States than any cancer except lung cancer. No one knows why some women get breast cancer, but all women are at risk. My mother, friends and clients have all been affected by breast cancer, so this fundraiser is very important to me. When I called Devoted Creations to ask for support, the company jumped on board. DC donated about $1,000 in retail product (all sales proceeds will go to the foundation) and also made a monetary donation to the foundation in honor of our salon.”
Though Cushen is not walking this year, at least two of her customers are, and each is thrilled to see the salon take an active roll in raising money and awareness for breast cancer.
“On a business note, I think this has really helped my salon in the slower season and has encouraged my customers to purchase Devoted Creations,” Cushen says. “Once they know their money is going toward a good cause, they are more willing to buy.”
