North Plainfield, N.J. is considering new regulations for tanning salons within its boundaries at the city council meeting today.
The proposed regulations include adopting an ordinance that requires salon owners to obtain an annual license, and to consent to a fingerprint and criminal-background check by the borough police department. In addition, salon owners must provide the names and addresses of three adult Somerset County residents to serve as character references. Finally, the salon must keep a complete list of the names and addresses of all employees, which could be made available to police if necessary.
Under this new ordinance, tanning businesses also may be subject to an annual inspection by the municipality and may be required to provide protective eyewear to tanners free of charge. It is also noted that a salon establishment cannot be connected with any bedroom or sleeping quarters.
The 8 p.m. meeting to review the new regulations will be held in the community center.
