Ten Florida tanning salons, along with Clearwater, Fla.-based Devoted Creations and Gulf Management Systems (GMS), got some great press and gave back to the community at the Miss Indoor Tanning Contest this May.

The contest was held at Banbu, an exclusive Florida nightclub, and WFLZ-FM 93.3 broadcasted live from the event. Twenty-four contestants came dressed to impress in all-white outfits—to show off their tans—and helped raise money for Academy Prep Center of St. Petersburg, a non-profit middle school for underprivileged kids.

Salons handed out coupons to those in the crowd while the girls competed for a selection of prizes, including a celebrity-stylist makeover, a $300 professional photo shoot with one of the photos being featured in a Devoted Creations ad, a four-night stay at the Wyndham, jewelry and lingerie shopping sprees, a wine-tasting party for ten, a free massage, Tampa Bay Rays tickets and much more.

Congratulations to the three winners:

  • First place—Crissy Van Worp from A Miracle Tan
  • Second place—Shannon Britt from Tanning Cove
  • Third place—Kelsey Hale from Planet Beach

The results of the event are proof of what can happen when distributors, salons, vendors and local businesses come together for a cause. GMS sponsored the event and Devoted Creations donated lotions to raffle off throughout the night, as well as the stay at a five-star resort.

“Every little bit we can do to help the school counts,” says Devoted Creations President Lewis Henry.

“We wanted something fun, high-class and different from anything we had ever done before,” says Tracy Blalock, marketing director for GMS. “Our goal was to raise $2,000 for Academy Prep, and we exceeded our goals and expectations—we ended up raising $2,279 for the school. We are looking forward to an even bigger and better contest next year!”
