WHITE PLAINS, N.Y.--Proposed legislation that would ban minors age 15 and younger from visiting tanning salons and require parental consent for 16- and 17-year-olds to use tanning salons was the subject of a Nov. 28 public hearing before the Westchester County Board of Legislators. Speakers at the hearing included area dermatologists and tanning salon owners.

The proposed bill, which was prompted by health concerns over tanning bed use, was passed out of Health and Legislative Committees and is expected to go before the full board for a vote on Dec. 12.

The law would require 16- and 17-year-old tanners to have written permission from a parent or guardian. The permission form would include a health warning and need to be signed in the presence of a salon owner or operator.

The law, which would be enforced by the County Health Department, also calls for salons to post health warning signs.
