Suspect Caught After Trapping Woman in Tanning Bed

A 20-year-old female customer was the victim of a strange encounter at a tanning salon located in an underground shopping complex in downtown Winnipeg. Police reports show the 29-year-old man went through an employee-only room and jumped over a wall to access a private room where the young woman was tanning. His intentions are still unknown.

The customer yelled for help, at which point, he pushed the lid of the tanning bed down to keep her from escaping. She kept screaming and he fled the scene. A salon spokesperson says the man seemed startled to find the room occupied and used the tanning bed to help him climb out of the room. The woman was not injured, but is said to have been emotionally upset by the event.

When staff members became aware of the situation, they hit a panic button that summoned the police. The man was apprehended almost two weeks later and charged with voyeurism, breaking and entering, forcible confinement and mischief. Some of his salon hijinks was captured on a video surveillance camera.

An ongoing investigation is under way, as police discovered the suspect had a database of female residents in the area which included addresses and “shower times.” No further charges have been pressed yet, and the man is out on bail with a January court date scheduled. Thus far, police are not associating the man with other criminal activities that occurred earlier this year in area businesses.
