Wal-Mart Supports Obama’s Health Insurance Objective

07/02/2009

In a letter to President Obama, Wal-Mart Chief Executive Mike Duke expressed his company’s support of the administration’s push to provide near-universal health care.

While most other major companies are objecting to President Obama’s call that all but small companies provide medical coverage to the their employees, the support of the largest private employer in the United States could prove extremely advantageous to the legislation’s momentum.

The retail industry is in shock at the news, reports The Wall Street Journal, including some of the largest lobbyers against the mandate, the National Retail Federation and the U.S. Chamber of Commerce; many believe an employer mandate would destroy some businesses and hinder an economic recovery.

To this Wal-Mart reportedly cites the responsibility of all businesses to share the burden of improved health care for the nation, and that it only supports this mandate if government gets health care costs under control as promised.
