Wal-Mart Will Expand, Create 22K New Jobs in 2009

Wal-Mart is touting an expansion plan that would allow the world’s largest discount retailer to open 150 new stores and create 22,000 new jobs in the United States in 2009.

Though many of the new jobs will be clerks and cashiers, Wal-Mart is quick to point out that new professional positions, including store managers and personnel representatives.

The annual shareholders meeting is this week in Bentonville, Ark., the world headquarters of Wal-Mart.

Though Wal-Mart has long been the target of union and employees’ rights, it now claims that 94 percent of its employees have health benefits. Also, Wal-Mart has tried to lead the charge in keeping health care costs down by offering generic prescriptions for as little as $4.
