UK Sunbed Association Supports Ban On Unmanned Salons

06/26/2009

Recently, the Committee on Medical Aspects of Radiation in the Environment (Comare) released its report regarding indoor tanning equipment, recommending stricter regulations for the industry.

One proposed regulation was a ban on unmanned tanning salons and, according to the BBC News, The Sunbed Association (TSA) says it would support measures to close those salons.

However, the group does not support the under-18 ban proposed by Comare—in the report, TSA Chief Executive Kathy Banks is quoted as saying that her members already enforce a strict ban on children using tanning equipment and that, “if you are old enough at 16 to get married or join the army, it seems wrong to say you are not old enough to decide if you want to use a sunbed."

TSA also disputed claims that tanning salons were responsible for a rise in skin cancer.
