Tanning, Vitamin D, Battle Flu

11/16/2009

Recent research reveals that vitamin D deficiency may be present in more than three-fourths of Americans. Certain age groups and populations are specifically at high-risk for low levels of vitamin D, including black and Hispanic children.

Vitamin D has been linked to aiding in the avoidance of many health problems, including Swine Flu and various diseases and forms of cancer.

There are many ways to increase vitamin D in the body, including safe exposure to UV rays, dietary intake and supplements. However, there are also various reasons people may not be able to process the vitamin, which may further contribute to deficient levels. Some of these include health, weight, age, medical conditions and medications.

Proper intake amounts of vitamin D are still being discussed by the medical community. It’s difficult to recommend a general recommended dosage when so many factors come into play regarding an individual’s vitamin D levels. Suggested amounts vary from 400 IU per day up to 500,000 (the latter is by injection from a medical professional and only in the most severe cases of deficiency). Readers should take note that a blatant excess of vitamin D can dangerous, even toxic, with a variety of possible negative reactions.

Numerous studies are under way regarding vitamin D and its health benefits. For more information, visit the source.
