Study: Vitamin D Linked To Alzheimer’s Gene

01/06/2009

New research indicates that the “Alzheimer’s gene,” or apolipoprotein E, may be connected to the way the brain uses vitamin D. Scientists have previously found a link between the onset of Alzheimer’s and the gene; in addition, vitamin D has been linked to memory problems.

The study, published in the American Journal of Human Genetics, compared the genes of 492 patients who suffered from Alzheimer's disease with genes from 498 people who did not have Alzheimer’s. The analysis identified single variants within DNA cells that are more common in patients with Alzheimer's—a variation that is close to the gene that uses vitamin D in the brain and has previously been linked to memory.
