Study: Sun Exposure May Have Anti-Melanoma Effect Through Vitamin D

09/23/2008

A new study indicates an association between skin cancer and Bsml, a receptor gene involved in vitamin D metabolism.

The study, which will be published in the journal Cancer, suggests that genetic differences in Bsml are the reason that people have different levels of vitamin D, and that this means some people may have more vitamin D-related protection against cancer than others.

The researchers wrote that the "findings prompt further investigation on this subject and indirectly support the hypothesis that sun exposure might have an anti-melanoma effect through activation of the vitamin D system."
