Social Networks Attract Nearly Half Of Internet Users

06/18/2009

New data shows that 43 percent of all Internet users are involved with at least one social network, which is up from 27 percent the year before.

The nonprofit global research group The Conference Board unveiled the statistics in its quarterly Consumer Internet Barometer.

Among social network users, the most popular network is Facebook (78 percent), followed by MySpace (42 percent), LinkedIn (17 percent) and Twitter (10 percent).

The biggest growth came from users older than 55. Now 19 percent of the 55-and-older crowd are on a social network, up from 6 percent last year. Also important to note: Women (48 percent) are slightly more apt to use social networking than men (38 percent).
