Lectric Beach Educates Clients On Skincare, Vitamin D And Sunlight Benefits

Skincare, vitamin D and the positive effects of sunlight were the featured topics at Lectric Beach Tanning Club's 2009 Lotion Symposium, held this April in Milwaukee. This symposium was part of the salon chain’s "Educational Enlightenment Series," which was an appreciation night to reward loyal customers with giveaways and provide educational outreach for club members.

"You are our ambassadors for tanning," Dion Borkowicz, owner of Lectric Beach, told the crowd, as he kicked off the night and introduced featured speaker Megan Rutherford, an Australian Gold salon trainer.

Rutherford was able to provide detailed descriptions of the Australian Gold, Designer Skin and Swedish Beauty products specifically sold at Lectric Beach Tanning Club and demonstrated how product can enhance a tan and save clients money. Rutherford says that, instead of giving the same presentation she uses when training staff to sell lotions, she geared this presentation towards educating, motivating and celebrating clients who care enough to come to the symposium on their own time.

Symposium attendees also viewed a short history of tanning—from the Roman, Egyptians and Greeks who worshipped the sun to CoCo Chanel, the icon who made tanned skin fashionable in the 20th century. The video also looked at the “sun scare” issues faced by tanners today and featured an array of YouTube clips regarding the benefits of vitamin D.

"I started thinking, ‘How did we get so far way from the idea that sunlight is natural and needed?" says Lectric Beach Vice President Melanie Murphy. "There is mounting evidence—an avalanche really—that shows maintaining a healthy level of vitamin D level may be the most important thing you can do for your health."

Attendees also received free lotion packets and bottles (provided by Rutherford and local distributor, Tan U), coupons for a free hydrotherapy massage and certificates for complimentary upgrades to premium equipment at Lectric Beach. A raffle was also held, which included prizes such as top-shelf premium lotions, free tanning sessions and ShineWhite teeth-whitening services.
