ITA Issues Statement Regarding Ohio HB 173

05/11/2009

The Indoor Tanning Association (ITA) denounced Ohio’s HB 173, which would require individuals under the age of 18 to get a prescription from a doctor before using tanning equipment—and, inexplicably, the bill also applies to spray tanning.

"It is inconsistent and illogical for a teen in Ohio to be forced to have a prescription from a doctor before they can use a tanning bed,” says John Overstreet, executive director of the ITA. “At 17, an Ohio teen can serve his or her country by joining the military. At 16, an Ohio teen is entrusted with the ability to operate a motor vehicle entirely unsupervised by a doctor or parent. At 16 and 17, Ohio teens can even get married as long as a parent consents. But, they can’t tan indoors without a doctor’s prescription. It is already standard practice to obtain written parental consent before allowing a teen to use a tanning bed—and that’s how it should remain. A parent should decide whether or not it's OK for their teen to tan. Not the Ohio legislature."

Overstreet also noted that tanning salons in Ohio are already among the most highly regulated in the country.
