England Moves Closer to Teen Tan Ban

12/18/2009

Hot on the heels of a government-commissioned study that revealed a quarter of a million British teens were using tanning beds, an English political activist has presented a Private Member’s Bill. Cardiff North MP Julie Morgan is seeking changes regarding adult tanning supervision throughout England and Wales, as well as making the activity illegal for teens.

According to the BBC, British Public Health Minister Gillian Merron says the government is in support of these measures. She personally showed public support for the under-18 tanning ban proposal, stating, “Voluntary action by the industry is not enough to protect young people.”

Scotland recently enacted a new law restricting teens from tanning, and the Welsh are cracking down on unstaffed salons, of which a government study showed there were 46 out of a total of 419 tanning businesses in the region.

With a general election likely scheduled in May, Morgan is hopeful her efforts will result in a new law. She acknowledges that people who tan say they look and feel better. However, her agenda is clear as she specifies, “This bill would not only ensure that children are protected but that adults who do use sunbed salons would have access to accurate health information.”
